Operation Flashpoint Cold War Crisis

The following after-action report covers a spur of the moment mission created in Bohemia Interactive’s game Operation Flashpoint Cold War Crisis that was played in Windows XP earlier this evening. I hadn't done anything in this oldie but goodie for quite some time, so I decided to brush away the cobwebs and take it for a spin. Using the mission editor in this game is seriously like riding a bicycle, I was able to create the most rudimentary mission and play it through the editor with just a few clicks.

Free Game Weekend - Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis

The original Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis (repackaged as ARMA: Cold War Assault) is being offered for free on Steam until Monday. This is not just a free play weekend for ArmA III, but they are actually giving away perhaps the greatest military combined arms game ever created in the Cold War Assault title. Sure it is pushing 13 years since originally released back in June 2001, but great games age well and this title has been verified to run in Windows 7 (I have downloaded the free game and have confirmed this).

Armor Probe with Infantry Support

Situation: A Soviet Mechanized Infantry Squad is in the town of Bitov on the Island of Nogova and is preventing the repatriation of local citizens. A request has been received by the local government in Lipany to liberate Bitov as soon as possible.

Mission: Call-sign Hammer, class M1A1 MBT will approach the AO (Bitov) from the NW and engage primary target designated T1, a class BMP-2 armored personnel carrier believed to be in operational readiness. Call-sign Alpha, class regular infantry squad will hold at phase line Whiskey and await confirmation of target T1 elimination, then proceed to target T2 and eliminate the AT threat to Hammer.

Good Time Gaming

I got a major nostalgia boner tonight watching YouTube video of old Operation Flashpoint Cold War Crisis gameplay. I dug around and found the three disks I have - the original CWC, the Gold Upgrade with the Red Hammer campaign, and finally the Resistance disk.

It took some more digging to find the game manuals but luckily I kept them in a shoebox in mint condition for the CD keys. After a bit of confusion regarding the installation and patching, I was good to go. 1) Install Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis (1.2) 2) Install Red Hammer (1.3) 3) Install patch 1.46 4) Install Resistance (1.75) 5) Install patch 1.96.
