Fight for Best

Chris over at The Sharp End Gaming has released another scenario for Command Operations, this one titled "Fight for Best". His AAR as the Allies is available here. My AAR as the Axis forces is below, and I managed to achieve a similar result as Chris, although losses by side seemed to be flipped. It would be interesting to play this specific scenario as a multiplayer match.

LXXXVIII Korps HQ (1,618 personnel) is ordered to Defend at the Best Objective (21 Victory Points, all at completion). This force should be sufficient to hold the objective for the duration of the scenario.

At 23:16 the 1034th Infantry Regiment (632 personnel) arrives and is ordered to Deny Crossing at the Rail Bridge Objective (14 Victory Points, all at completion) using an approach route along the Wilhelmina Kanaal road.

At 01:15 on Day 2 KG 347 Battalion arrives (136 personnel) and is ordered to perform a harassing probe of the Allied landing zones in an effort to disrupt their plan of attack.

At 06:00 KG Jungwirth (744 personnel) arrives and is ordered to attack the St. Oedenrode Bridge Objective (14 Victory Points, all at completion). The assault forming-up point is set behind a patch of woods just north of Ruzingen.

At 06:15 KG Rink Battalion arrives and is ordered to Deny Crossing at the Best Road Bridge Objective (7 Victory Points, all at completion) using an approach route along the Wilhelmina Kanaal road.

At 12:00 KG Jungwirth is executing the assault phase of their attack on the St. Oedenrode Bridge Objective while KG 347 continues its harassment of the Allied landing zones. With the Best Road Bridge blown, KG Rink is re-tasked to probe north into the Verrebest area around the Best Objective in order to take some pressure off of LXXXVIII Korps HQ defending there.

At 18:00 KG Jungwirth is in control of the St. Oedenrode Bridge Objective. 2 Coy (122 personnel) is detached and sent south to pick up the Road to Neinsel Objective (3 Victory Points, all at completion). A mass of approximately 1,000 Allied paratroopers sits above Verrebest trying to breakthrough to the Best Objective.

At 00:00 KG Jungwirth has slipped into a unit with no orders state and is re-tasked to defend in-situ at the St. Oedenrode Bridge Objective. LXXXVIII Korps HQ continues to hold the Best Objective with the help of the probe from KG Rink.

At 06:00 KG Jungwirth has been in a fight at the St. Oedenrode Bridge Objective, losing and regaining it several times throughout the night to an unknown number of Allied paratroops. 3 SP Lt Flak Coy which was dispatched to defend at the Fraeterhof Bridge Objective surrendered (this was a waste of firepower).

At 12:00 things are starting to look grim for the Axis forces as the St. Oedenrode Bridge Objective continues to change hands. KG Jungwirth is struggling to fend off the concerted assaults and is re-tasked to attack their own objective in an effort to push the Allied thrust back across the Dommel River.

At 18:00 the St. Oedenrode Bridge Objective is still unresolved as KG Jungwirth was unable to unseat the Allied forces within the objective radius. With the fatigue level of this unit almost maxed, a semi-futile effort is mounted in the form of a broad frontage attack in a last-ditch effort to save the objective.

The scenario ends in a draw. Even with the St. Oedenrode Bridge Objective at hand the best I would have managed here is a Marginal Victory. It was a costly effort for the Allies as they lost 1,155 men compared to only 537 Axis losses.

  1. Hi Tim. Thanks for posting this! I think we should try this as a multiplayer match sometime. I've not done that yet but I am interested. So how is the scenario playing? Any tweaks I should make? And just so I can help balance the two scenarios in my mind. Is the Lion Route more difficult in your mind? Or Best? Chris

  2. My screen shots are out of sequence, I will need to revise this post. The scenario plays well as both Allies and Axis and I think the balance is decent (no need to go playing with forces, etc). I thought The Lion Route was more difficult, but it is a completely different scenario. Both are a challenge and enjoyable to play (and re-play) and IMHO that is the best you can ask of any scenario design effort.
